Evaluating Of Care Burden and Quality Of Life Among The Family Caregivers Of Persons With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate care burden and quality of life among caregivers of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Materials and Methods: This study which is descriptive and cross sectional was conducted with 203 family caregivers of hospitalized patients in a respiratory disease clinic in a university hospital in Manisa. The data were collected by face to face interview by means of general information form patients and their family caregivers by using Caregiver Burden Scale and Short Form-36. Mean±Standart Deviation, Pearsons correlation analysis were used for statistical analysis.
Results: The mean age of caregivers were 50.1±17.1 (18-87) years, 76.4% were female and 80.8% were married. The caregivers mean scores of Caregiver Burden Scale were found 62.5±18.1 (0-30), mean scores of subscale of Short Form were found respectively, physical functioning 19.7±7.9 (0-30), role physical 14.8±3.5 (0-17), bodily pain 15.7±4.0 (0-21), general health 14.1±6.6 (0-25), vitality 11.0±7.2 (0-22), social functioning 14.5±3.5 (0-20), role emotional 24.0±2.4 (0-29) ve mental health 13.9±8.4 (0-27).
Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that family caregivers of persons with COPD perceived that high levels of care burden, their life was affected adversely, they had also lower quality of life.
