The Problems about the Management of Tuberculosis Control Program for the Patients with Vertebral Tuberculosis

Introduction: The aim of this study was to identify the problems about the management of tuberculosis control program for the patients who were diagnosed as vertebral tuberculosis and taken into rehabilitation program by investigating retrospectively their diagnosis, treatment and follow up period.

Material and Methods: The patients who were diagnosed as vertebral tuberculosis and rehabilitated as inpatient, between the dates of 01/01/2009 and 31/12/2013, in Ankara Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Training and Research Hospital, were included in the study. The data about the diagnosis and treatment were collected by reviewing the files and previous reports of the patients. Besides; the other data were obtained from the records of tuberculosis dispensaries.

Results: 5 female and 2 male patients were included in the study. The ages ranged between 14 and 81 and average age was 53.3±32.5. The initial symptoms were seemed to differ and delays related with diagnosis and treatment were detected. Some problems related with the treatment protocol such as; duration of the treatment’s beginning and maintenance, the total duration of treatment, the medical treatments used in maintenance period, were observed. Furthermore; troubles about the follow-up period and “Directly Observed Therapy” (DOT) were also detected.

Conclusion: Tuberculosis control program should be effectively managed to provide the following conditions; the early and right diagnosis, the notification of diagnosis, the adequate duration for treatment and follow-up, inter-departmental coordination and completion of treatment.
